The Road Trip Up North Part 24: The Exquisite Beauty of Pilgrimage Island-December 24, 2017

The very big statue of Jesus Christ was on the top of the island that we visited next, that’s why it is aptly called the Pilgrimage Island.

Unlike the other islands, this one was quiet. It is a place for the people who want to meditate. There are conspicuously located signs, reminding us to be as quiet as possible.

We wanted to see the statue up close. It was not an easy climb—the island is one of the highest among all of the islands. Halfway through the climb, Lee stopped for some rest. We were panting. Fortunately, there was an ice cream seller, peddling his ice cream so quietly, respectful of the serene surroundings.  We enjoyed our ice cream while looking at the sea. After that, we slowly continued our ascent.

We finally reached the top.  The statue is really big, but it was intricately made. It was well thought of, the work of artisans. For countless of times, Lee said “Wow” while examining every detail of the statue. I looked at the statue in awe. From the creases of the garments of Jesus Christ, (which of course is made of stone because it’s a sculpture,) to the lines of his toes… everything looked so realistic. The people who made it deserve recognition.

I remembered the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer is situated on a mountain, overlooking a scenic bay which is also near a place with lots of modern buildings.  No doubt, it’s one of the most beautiful and most recognizable landmarks in the world.

The statue of Christ in Pilgrimage Island is not that high compared to the Christ the Redeemer, but it has its own spectacular, breathtaking beauty. It is situated on a very high island and from there, we could have a vantage view of the other islands, green specks against the azure waters of Lingayen Gulf. From the the base of the island to the top of the island is a winding stairway, decorated with lush ornamental plants such as bougainvillea flowers in many different colors. There is also a forested part of the island, and one can hear the gentle breeze among the leaves, along with the chirping and singing of the little birds. The fallen leaves carpeting the ground added serenity to the ascent.

There were some untaken chairs on the back of the statue and I made myself comfortable in one of them while Lee was leaning against the railing, just enjoying the view. I also sat down quietly, absorbing the beauty of nature that was set before me, lost in the beauty of the surroundings. I sat down and just filled my eyes and heart with awe.

After a while, some people started talking about the other attractions of Pangasinan. One of the women started talking about a place called Bolinao.

I made a mental note.

I was peacefully taking a picture of my shadow when crazy Lee approached me and made an inverted V-sign over my head.
